What is DORB (De-Oiled Rice Bran)?

De-Oiled Rice Bran (DORB) is the by-product left after rice bran oil is extracted from rice bran (the outer layer of the rice grain).
Once the oil is removed, the leftover material — DORB — is rich in protein, fiber, and essential nutrients, but low in fat.

How is DORB Produced?

  1. Rice Milling: Rice is milled to remove the husk and bran.

  2. Rice Bran Extraction: The oil is extracted from the rice bran, usually through a solvent extraction process (using hexane or mechanical methods).

  3. De-Oiled Product: The material that remains after oil removal is called De-Oiled Rice Bran.

Composition of DORB

Component Typical Value (%)
Crude Protein 16–18%
Crude Fiber 11–14%
Ash (Minerals) 10–12%
Fat 1–2% (very low)
Nitrogen-Free Extract (NFE) 50–55%
Moisture 10–12%

(Exact composition can vary depending on the rice variety and processing method.)

Uses of DORB

Use Details
Animal Feed A major ingredient in cattle, poultry, fish, and pig feed. It provides energy and protein.
Organic Fertilizer Used in making organic compost and fertilizers because of its nutrient richness.
Industrial Applications Used in biofuel, bioplastics, and enzyme production industries.
Aquaculture Important component in fish feed for its balanced nutrient profile.

Advantages of DORB

  • Cost-Effective: It’s cheaper than soybean meal or maize.

  • Sustainable: It utilizes by-products from rice processing, reducing waste.

  • Nutrient-Rich: Good balance of protein, fiber, and minerals.

  • Digestibility: Improved with proper processing (like pelleting or enzyme treatment).

Limitations/Challenges

  • High Fiber Content: May reduce digestibility for some animals (especially poultry) unless treated.

  • Lower Protein Quality: Compared to soybean meal or fish meal.

  • Anti-Nutritional Factors: Phytates and silica can reduce mineral absorption unless treated.
